The body and health
From where it hurts to what the doctor writes down.
What holds these lists together
Japanese describes pain with sound words where English reaches for adjectives, and a doctor will ask which one it is: ずきずき is a throbbing pain, きりきり a sharp, stabbing one, ひりひり the sting of a burn or a graze. Choosing the right one often tells the doctor more than saying how bad it is. Illness also takes verbs English would not choose: a fever comes out, 熱が出る, and a cold is pulled in, 風邪を引く. The language on the form is mostly kanji compounds, and the lists climb from the parts of the body to diagnosis and treatment, so that the compounds arrive after the everyday words they are built from.
