A common trap

Wrong Quando sono arrivato, aveva già uscito.

Right Quando sono arrivato, era già uscito.

English builds this tense out of one word, « had », and it is the same word for every verb in the language. So the English sentence gives no help at all with the question Italian is still asking: avevo or ero. The answer is the one from two chapters back, and it has not gone away — uscire takes essere in every compound tense it has.
