How German places one event before, beside or after another, and how it says how long something lasts.
One phrase in this list is built to mislead an English reader. Dieser Tage is a genitive of time, and word for word it is these days. It does not mean what these days means in English. Das Urteil wird dieser Tage erwartet says the verdict is due within the next few days; Dieser Tage erreichte uns ein Brief says a letter arrived a few days ago. Either way the phrase covers a short stretch of calendar close to today, and the tense of the verb decides which side of today it lies on. For the present age, for how things are now in general, German says heutzutage or in der heutigen Zeit. Read dieser Tage as nowadays and a date turns into a trend. The rest of the list places one event against another more plainly: zuvor, unterdessen, seither, and at the end the words for how long it all goes on.
