Language trips abroad

Placement tests, host families and the first weeks of speaking — and what is still there once you are home.

Two adjectives near the end of this list look like spelling variants and are not. English covers both with one phrase, « foreign-language », and German keeps them apart by the ending. Fremdsprachig describes what is in another language or who speaks one: fremdsprachige Literatur is written in it, fremdsprachige Gäste talk in it. Fremdsprachlich describes what is about foreign languages: der fremdsprachliche Unterricht teaches them, and its textbook may well be written in German. The ending -ig names what a thing has or is in, the ending -lich what it concerns, and the same split separates deutschsprachig, German-speaking, from sprachlich, linguistic. Put the wrong one into a course application and the sentence still reads smoothly; it simply says something else.

With mit + dative. Sich auf etwas verständigen means to agree on something.

Weak and inseparable, but with ge- in front: er radebrecht, hat geradebrecht.

Inseparable; irregular: überwand, hat überwunden. Followed by zu + infinitive.

Separable; irregular: hielt mit, hat mitgehalten. With mit + dative.

Separable. Without an object it is said of the wind: der Wind frischt auf, the wind is getting up.

Wer danach nicht übt, merkt, wie schnell die Sprache wieder einrostet.If you do not practise afterwards, you notice how quickly the language gets rusty again.

Separable; perfect with sein: ist eingerostet.
