Sports medicine and training
Load, injury and rebuilding — and when you are allowed back.
One verb on this list leads three lives, and a sports page can use all of them in the same edition. Sich das Knie prellen is to bruise a knee in a collision, which is the sense this list is here for, and what shows up the next morning is der Bluterguss. In handball den Ball prellen is to bounce the ball while running with it. And jemanden um etwas prellen is to cheat somebody out of what they are owed: a guest who walks out of a pub without paying has die Zeche geprellt and is a Zechpreller. Nothing in the verb itself tells the three apart. The object does the work — a part of your own body, a ball, or a person followed by um and the thing they lost. Read the object first and the sentence sorts itself out.
