Chess: reading a position

One word on this list reached English by a detour. Der Kiebitz is first a bird, the lapwing, and at a chess or card table it is the onlooker who stands behind the players and cannot keep his opinions to himself; the verb is kiebitzen. Yiddish took the verb over as kibitsen, and from Yiddish it passed into American English in the twentieth century as « to kibitz », with « kibitzer » for the person — the same meddling spectator, who went on to haunt bridge tables as well. In German the word never left the game room: die Kiebitze are the small crowd around a board, and the rest of this list is the vocabulary they whisper in, from der Isolani to das Qualitätsopfer.
