Religion and belief
The words for describing religious practice, buildings and institutions — and the tax that surprises new arrivals.
This page describes vocabulary and holds no position on any belief. Two institutional facts explain why some of these words come up in ordinary administrative German. Germany and Austria collect a church tax from registered members through the tax system — die Kirchensteuer — so the registration form asks about religion. And several public holidays are religious in origin and differ from state to state, which is why der Feiertag and Fronleichnam turn up in a discussion about a calendar.
