Sewing, knitting and fabric

Mending a seam, taking up a hem and reading a pattern — in German.

This is one of the places where German prefers a separable verb to a phrase: English takes a hem up, German says auftrennen, annähen, zuschneiden, and the prefix carries the direction. Note also that die Masche is a stitch in knitting while der Stich is one in sewing — two different words for what English calls the same thing.
