Style and dressing up
Formal and casual, fabrics and patterns, and the vocabulary of an invitation that names a dress code.
Beyond the basic clothing words, this is the vocabulary of register: what to wear where, and how to describe it. German invitations often state it outright — festliche Kleidung, legere Kleidung — and the words are worth recognising because guessing wrong is visible all evening. Note also that das Kostüm is a woman’s suit here, not a fancy-dress outfit, which is die Verkleidung.
