One short noun in this list looks like an old acquaintance and is nothing of the sort. Die Glut is what is left of a fire once the flames have gone: the red, breathing bed of embers you bake potatoes in. It belongs with the verb glühen, to glow, and it stretches only as far as heat and glow will take it — die Glut der Mittagssonne, the blazing heat of noon, and, in a novel, the ardour of a passion. What it never means is the English glut, a market swamped with more than anyone wants. That is das Überangebot, or, when milk or apples pile up, die Schwemme. So a sentence about Glut is always about something burning low and hot, and reading an oversupply into it turns a campfire into an economics report.
