Aperture, exposure and the shape of a picture — and how to talk about a photograph.

Scharfstellen is written as one word and does not stay one. The adjective at the front behaves exactly like a separable prefix. In a main clause it moves to the end: Ich stelle auf die Augen scharf. In the participle, ge slips in between the two halves: Hast du scharfgestellt? And zu does the same: Vergiss nicht scharfzustellen. The tempting mistake is to treat it as a single verb, the way English treats “focus”, and to say ich scharfstelle, which no German speaker would. What you focus on takes auf with the accusative: auf den Vordergrund. Compare überbelichten in the same list, which really is one piece: ich überbelichte, and a participle without ge, überbelichtet. An adjective that names the result of the action — scharf, fest, frei — splits off like a prefix; a prefix such as be- never does.

Colloquial. Separable and irregular: säuft ab, soff ab, ist abgesoffen. Also said of a flooded engine or a sinking boat.

Separable: stellt scharf, scharfgestellt, scharfzustellen. Takes auf with the accusative.

Most common as the participle: ein verwackeltes Foto.

Separable. Also of weather and moods: der Himmel hellt sich auf.
