Half of this list is built on one short stem. Zünden, to ignite, sits inside die Zündquelle, zündfähig, die Zündtemperatur, die Mindestzündenergie and die Zündschutzart, and it has a noun beside it that most learners never meet: der Zunder, tinder. The likeness to the English word is not an accident. Zünden, Zunder and tinder all go back to one Germanic root for kindling a fire. English kept only the dry stuff and took ignite from Latin for the act itself; German kept both halves under one stem, so that the tinderbox and the spark plug, die Zündkerze, still sound related, because they are. Read Zünd- at the front of any compound here as the instant something catches, and the rest of the word tells you what is being measured, kept away or contained.
