Volunteering and clubs in German

The formal machinery of a German club, which is where most voluntary work actually happens.

A great deal of German civic life is organised as a registered association, der eingetragene Verein or e. V., and that form brings a fixed set of offices and rituals: a written constitution, an annual members meeting, an elected board, minutes of every session. Charitable status — die Gemeinnützigkeit — is granted by the tax office and is what allows a club to issue the receipts that make donations tax-deductible.
