One duty catches out almost every new arrival in Germany and Austria: registering your address. Moving into a flat means reporting it to the local office within a fixed period, and the confirmation you get is then needed for a bank account, a phone contract and almost everything else. The vocabulary of these offices is formal, repetitive and therefore learnable — the same twenty words carry most of what a letter from one of them contains.
