Die Aufhängung comes from aufhängen, and the verb inside it, hängen, is really two verbs that share a spelling in the present tense. Without an object it is strong: der Fahrkorb hängt an den Tragseilen, er hing, er hat gehangen. With an object it is weak: der Monteur hängt ein Schild an die Tür, er hängte es an die Tür, er hat es an die Tür gehängt. The two part company in the past, and that is where learners write hängte for a car that was only hanging there. Aufhängen always takes an object, so it is always weak: die Seile wurden neu aufgehängt. English splits its own verb along a different line, keeping « hanged » for the gallows and « hung » for everything else, so it offers no clue. In southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland the strong perfect is often formed with sein: er ist gehangen.
