Im Café
Two friends, a rainy Saturday and an order at the table.
Ordering politely. Ich möchte is the friendly way to say what you want, and the waiter uses Sie, always with a capital S: Was möchten Sie trinken? Notice also es regnet — German weather needs an es, just as English needs an it.
Es ist Samstag. Ella und ihre Freundin Nora sitzen in einem kleinen Café. Draußen regnet es. Drinnen ist es warm.
Der Kellner kommt und fragt: „Was möchten Sie trinken?“ Ella möchte einen Tee mit Milch. Nora nimmt einen Kaffee und ein Glas Wasser.
„Möchten Sie auch etwas essen?“, fragt der Kellner. Ella nimmt ein Stück Torte. Nora hat keinen Hunger.
Die beiden reden lange über die Arbeit, über das Wetter und über den Urlaub im Sommer. Um vier Uhr bezahlt Ella. Das kostet zusammen elf Euro.
