Le marché du samedi

Shopping between eight and ten, with a mistake at the till.

Numbers, prices and quantities in a text that explains nothing and uses everything. Notice how often a quantity is followed by just de and no article: beaucoup de fruits, un peu de sel. English says “a lot of fruit” without an article too — the trap is the other way round, when French does want one.

Le samedi le marché ouvre à huit heures. Anne arrive tôt parce que les fruits finissent vite. Elle a un grand sac et vingt euros.

À la première place elle achète des tomates et des pommes. Le voisin dit que les tomates sont de son jardin. Anne paye six euros et prend la monnaie.

Puis elle cherche le pain. La boulangerie du marché est derrière le café. Il y a beaucoup de monde mais ça va vite. Anne achète une baguette et des œufs pour son fils.

À la caisse du magasin il y a une chose qui ne va pas. Le billet dit neuf euros, mais Anne compte sept. La femme regarde et dit: vous avez raison, pardon. Le lait est en soldes aujourd’hui.

À dix heures Anne rentre à la maison. Le sac est lourd. Dans la cuisine elle met les fruits sur la table et ouvre la fenêtre. Dehors il fait déjà chaud.
