La panne sur l’autoroute

A breakdown, a tow truck and a garage in a village.

The vocabulary of the garage: le devis, la pièce, la garantie. Notice s’arrête — the reflexive pronoun is there because nobody is said to stop the car. English simply says “stops”.

La voiture s’arrête sur l’autoroute, quelques kilomètres après la sortie. Le moteur chauffe trop vite. Michel coupe tout et descend. La route est calme et personne ne passe pendant longtemps.

Il appelle l’assurance. La dame demande la plaque et l’endroit. Elle dit que la dépanneuse arrive dans l’heure. Michel reste assis et attend, le téléphone à la main.

La voiture part dans un petit garage de village. Le mécanicien ouvre et regarde longtemps. Puis il dit que c’est la batterie et que la pièce arrive seulement lundi. Michel demande un devis et le mécanicien écrit les chiffres sur une feuille.

Le travail coûte plus cher que la pièce. Michel demande s’il y a une remise et le mécanicien rit. Il y a toujours une remise pour les gens qui attendent, dit-il. La réparation a deux ans de garantie.

Lundi la voiture est prête. On a fait aussi le contrôle et l’huile est neuve. Michel paie par carte et garde le reçu. Le moteur ne fait plus de bruit.
