Precise adjectives

Adjectives for judging, describing and weighing things up with some precision.

At this level an adjective is often the more exact or more formal version of one you already know: 显著(xiǎnzhù) beside 明显(míngxiǎn), 迫切(pòqiè) beside 急(jí), 艰难(jiānnán) beside 难(nán). Many of them settle into fixed pairs with a noun, such as 严峻(yánjùn)的(de)考验(kǎoyàn), a severe test, or 深远(shēnyuǎn)的(de)影响(yǐngxiǎng), a far-reaching influence, and are best learnt in those pairs. As with all Chinese adjectives, no verb “to be” is needed: 天气(tiānqì)恶劣(èliè) is a complete sentence.
