Adverbs: how, when and how sure

Suddenly, finally, actually, on purpose, while you are at it, and other words that shade a verb.

A Chinese adverb stands after the subject and before the verb — not at the start or end of the sentence, where English often puts “suddenly” or “finally”: 他(tā)终于(zhōngyú)来(lái)了(le). A few may also open the sentence, among them 其实(qíshí), 突然(tūrán) and 当然(dāngrán), but the safe place is just before the verb. Several have no single English equivalent: 只好(zhǐhǎo) is “had no choice but to”, 顺便(shùnbiàn) is “while you are at it”.
