Describing things

Safe and dangerous, normal and strange, familiar, formal, and the shape and feel of things.

A Chinese adjective works as a verb by itself: 这(zhè)条(tiáo)路(lù)很(hěn)宽(kuān) needs no “is”. The 很(hěn) in that sentence mostly rounds it off and does not mean “very” unless it is stressed; without it a bare adjective sounds like a comparison. Several adjectives here come in pairs worth learning together — 宽(kuān) and 窄(zhǎi), 粗(cū) and 细(xì), 明亮(míngliàng) and 暗(àn).
