Annemin çorbası
Elif cooks her mother’s soup — from a recipe nobody ever wrote down.
A cooking text. The mother explains with the future in -ecek/-acak — doğrayacaksın, ekleyeceksin, “you’ll chop, you’ll add” — which is how instructions sound in Turkish between people who are close. Watch -ardı for habits in the past, English “used to”: yapardı “used to make”. And -meden, “without …-ing”: ölçmeden, “without measuring”.
Elif Almanya'da doğdu ve büyüdü. Çocukken annesi her kış domates çorbası yapardı. O çorbanın tadını hiç unutmadı.
Geçen ay Elif annesini aradı ve tarifi istedi. Annesi güldü: “Tarif mi? Ben hiçbir şeyi ölçmeden yapıyorum ki!”
Yine de telefonda adım adım anlattı: “Önce bir soğanı ince ince doğrayacaksın ve tereyağında kavuracaksın. Sonra domatesleri rendeleyip ekleyeceksin. Biraz su koyacaksın ve kısık ateşte kaynatacaksın. En sonunda biraz tuz serpeceksin.”
Elif hemen mutfağa girdi ve her şeyi yaptı. Ama çorba çok tuzlu oldu. Annesi “biraz tuz” demişti, Elif ise bir çay kaşığı koymuştu.
Elif annesini yeniden aradı. Annesi “Tuzu tadına bakarak koyacaksın, kızım,” dedi. İkinci gün Elif çorbayı yine yaptı ve bu sefer tadına bakarak tuz ekledi. Çorba tam annesinin çorbası gibi oldu.
