Contributions, qualifying periods, pensions and benefits — the words social protection is written in.
El tribunal médico propone el grado: the medical board proposes the degree. And el grado is a word English splits up according to what is being measured. It is the degree of a temperature or an angle, which is where the two languages agree. It is the degree you take at university — el grado en Derecho is the law degree, though English says degree there too. It is the rank in an army or a police force, where English says rank. It is the grade of a disability, as on this page. And de buen grado is an adverb: willingly, gladly, with nothing measured at all. Degree, grade, rank, willingly — one Spanish noun for four English slots, held together by the idea of a step on a ladder.
