Wildlife management

Counting the animals, setting the quota, and the paperwork that follows.

This is the vocabulary of managing a wild population rather than of the shot itself: counting, setting a quota, watching for disease, and proving afterwards where a carcass came from. The very first entry, el aprovechamiento cinegético, contains a word with no English equal. Aprovechar is to get the good out of something that is there — a resource, a chance, an afternoon. Aprovecha que hace sol means make the most of the sunshine; aprovechó el viaje para ver a su hermana means she used the trip for that too; aprovechar las sobras is using up what was left. And ¡que aproveche! is what is said to somebody who is eating — the same verb, wishing them the good of their food. El aprovechamiento is the noun of all that, so el aprovechamiento cinegético is the yield a population can give without being spent. English reaches for « make the most of », « take advantage of » or « use », and loses the thrift in every one.
