La supercompensación ocurre después del esfuerzo: supercompensation happens after the effort, not during it. « Effort » will do in that sentence, and it is the word that will let an English reader down nearly everywhere else on this page, because el esfuerzo carries three things English keeps well apart. « Effort » is the trying — how hard somebody is willing to work at something. « Exertion » is the physical work actually performed, and it is the word the discipline uses: the standard scale is one of « perceived exertion », and no physiologist writing English has ever called it perceived effort. « Strain » is what the tissue undergoes while all that is happening, and it is also the name of the injury that follows if there was too much of it. Spanish runs all three through esfuerzo and lets the sentence sort them out: hizo un gran esfuerzo praises somebody, el esfuerzo máximo measures somebody, and el esfuerzo del tendón describes a tendon that is not trying at all.
