Dance and choreography

La mirada del intérprete dirige la del público: the gaze of the performer directs that of the audience. The performer — because el intérprete is the person who carries out the work, and in Spanish that covers the dancer, the actor and the musician alike. English gave « interpreter » a single job instead, and it is a job in another room: the person who turns speech from one language into another, live. Nobody describes a dancer as an interpreter. What survives of the older sense in English is the abstract noun — « her interpretation of the role » is perfectly ordinary — so the split is in the word for the person, not in the idea. Two lines of this list need the Spanish word, and both of them want el bailarín or « the performer » in English; la sesión de trabajo con el intérprete is a rehearsal with a dancer, and not an appointment with a translator.
