Bioethics

Bioethics works with four principles that contradict one another — autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice — so it is a weighing rather than a rulebook. The word to watch is la mejora, in la mejora frente a la terapia. Spanish uses that one word for anything made better: a method, a house, a result. English keeps « improvement » for exactly that and holds a second word in reserve, « enhancement », for making a healthy person better than well — and the whole argument of this list turns on that second word. Spanish has to say la mejora again, or reach for el mejoramiento humano, which is why the boundary is harder to name in Spanish than the argument about it is to have.
