Records, description, shelfmark, strongroom — how paper is ordered, found and kept.
El expurgo de la colección is what a library does when it takes off the shelves what nobody borrows any more, and English calls that « weeding » — a word out of the garden, pulling up whatever crowds the rest. Spanish uses expurgar, from cleaning out, and the word has a heavier past: el Índice expurgatorio was the list of passages a censor ordered struck from a book. One verb has done both jobs, quietly making shelf room and, in another century, taking sentences out of other people's books.
