The first verbs in Polish

Be and have, go and ride, say, know, want and the other verbs of every first conversation.

Practise this list

From these 50 words, as many per round as you like — up to all of them: first what is due today, then new ones. First you choose, then you fill the gap, then you write it yourself. Mistakes come back again shortly.

More about this list

Almost every Polish verb comes twice: imperfective for what is going on or repeats, perfective for what gets completed. Here you learn the imperfective ones first, because only they make a present tense: czytam “I read, I am reading” — one form for both English tenses. The hint names the perfective partner; you will need it later for the past and the future. Learn each verb with its “I” and “you” forms, because the infinitive does not show how it conjugates: czytać → czytam, czytasz, but pisać → piszę, piszesz.
