Everyday Poland
Polite phrases for every occasion, the festivals of the year and a journey through the country.
What holds these lists together
These lists are not about an area of life but about a country. Politeness there has its set phrases: poproszę when ordering, proszę wejść at the door, z poważaniem at the end of a letter and sto lat on a birthday. The year has its festivals: Wigilia with the Christmas wafer and carp, the soaking-wet Easter Monday and the candles on the graves at All Saints. And a journey runs from the Baltic via Kraków to the Tatras, where they sell a smoked sheep’s cheese called oscypek. You learn these words not to build sentences but to be able to join in.
For example: poproszę (I’d like…, … please), Wigilia (Christmas Eve), Tatry (the Tatras, the Tatra Mountains)
