Body and health

The body, personal care, being ill and at the doctor’s, and what to say in an emergency.

What holds these lists together

What hurts, Polish says back to front: boli mnie głowa, literally “the head hurts me”. The head is the subject, and if several things hurt, the verb goes plural: bolą mnie nogi. There are other traps an English speaker does not expect: rękais both hand and armnogaboth leg and foot The lists go from the body via bathroom and chemist’s to the surgery, the prescription and the emergency number — so that in a real emergency you don’t have to hunt for the words.

For example: głowa (head), mydło (soap), dentysta (dentist), wypadek (accident), lek (medicine, drug)
