People and feelings

Family, friendship, character and feeling — at more than one resolution.

What holds these lists together

The family words are the first place where Korean draws lines English does not. An older brother is 형 to a younger brother but 오빠 to a younger sister; an older sister is 누나 to a boy and 언니 to a girl; anyone younger is simply 동생. The same words reach beyond the family: a woman may call a slightly older friend 언니, and a customer may call a waitress the same. Names are used less than in English, and a person older than you is rarely called by their name alone. Feelings have a grammar of their own, too: 슬퍼요, “I am sad”, describes your own feeling, while somebody else’s is told from outside, 친구가 슬퍼해요, “my friend is sad”, literally “shows sadness”. The lists go from the family and the first feelings to character, relationships and the vocabulary of the mind.

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
