The media

Television, newspapers, magazines and the internet: who makes it, who watches it and what people say about it.

Television vocabulary leans on a few kanji that combine freely: 放送(ほうそう) is broadcasting, so a live broadcast is 生放送(なまほうそう) and a repeat 再放送(さいほうそう); 〜者(しゃ) turns an activity into the people who do it, so viewers are 視聴者(しちょうしゃ) and readers 読者(どくしゃ). Online, a post that draws a storm of criticism is said to 炎上(えんじょう), to go up in flames — a word every Japanese reader of the news will know.
