Society, the news and history
What the news reports, what people argue about, and what came before.
What holds these lists together
News Japanese is a register of its own, and the difference is visible in a headline before it is heard: particles are cut, verbs drop away, and a line ends on a noun such as 発表 or 逮捕. The broadcast version is fuller but just as formal, and two endings decide how sure a report is: によると names a source, and とみられる marks what is believed but not confirmed. History adds its own way of counting time, by periods such as 江戸時代 and by the era names still printed on official forms. The lists run from an ordinary bulletin to the issues a society argues about.
