History

Eras, rulers, wars and the traces they left behind.

History is read far more than it is talked about, so this list is heavy with kanji. Japanese divides its own past into eras named after the seat of power or the reign — 江戸(えど)時代(じだい), 明治(めいじ)時代(じだい) — and history in general into 古代(こだい), 中世(ちゅうせい), 近代(きんだい) and 現代(げんだい). The trap is 近代(きんだい): it is "modern" as a period that began more than a century ago, while the world you live in now is 現代(げんだい).
