Money in daily life

Pay, rent, bills and savings: where the money comes from and where it goes.

Japanese builds most money words from a handful of kanji, and the last one tells you what kind of money it is: 〜費(ひ) is an expense (食費(しょくひ), 交通費(こうつうひ)), 〜料(りょう) a charge or fee, 〜税(ぜい) a tax. Two habits are worth knowing as well: splitting the bill evenly is so common it has its own word, 割(わ)り勘(かん), and もったいない, the sense that wasting something is a shame, has no neat English equivalent.
