Occupations

Who does what for a living, from lawyer and nurse to carpenter and voice actor.

Most job titles are built from a field and a suffix, and the suffix says something about the job. 〜士(し) and 〜師(し) mark a qualified profession (弁護士(べんごし), 看護師(かんごし)), 〜家(か) someone who creates or practises (画家(がか)), 〜員(いん) a member of staff (公務員(こうむいん)), and 〜手(しゅ) someone who performs a particular task (運転手(うんてんしゅ), 歌手(かしゅ)). Recognising the suffix often tells you the meaning before you have looked the word up.
