What holds these lists together

Everything you say about yourself and your own four walls: the body, the clothes, the flat, the neighbours — and the tradesmen who come in to fix, fit and rebuild it. Together these lists are the best practice there is for the Italian article. English has «the» for everything; Italian chooses by gender and by the first sound of the word, so it is il bagno, lo specchio, l’armadio and, in the plural, i bagni, gli specchi, gli armadi. There are enough words here beginning with a vowel or with s plus a consonant for the rule to settle before you have read it.
