La domenica al mare

A day trip that starts with rain and ends in sunshine.

Weather, time and feelings in one text — and with them the three places where Italian uses fare and avere where English says “to be”: fa freddo, ho fame, hanno paura.

Domenica mattina faceva brutto tempo. Il cielo era grigio e faceva ancora freddo. I bambini avevano già lo zaino sulla schiena e non volevano aspettare.

Siamo partiti alle nove. In macchina abbiamo cantato, poi abbiamo giocato con le parole. Dopo un’ora è cominciato a piovere forte e la strada è diventata lenta.

Alla spiaggia non c’era nessuno. Abbiamo mangiato in macchina: pane, formaggio e una torta. I bambini avevano fame e hanno finito tutto in dieci minuti.

All’una il vento ha cambiato direzione. Le nuvole sono andate via e il sole è arrivato. Abbiamo camminato sulla sabbia per due ore. L’acqua era fredda ma il piccolo ha voluto nuotare.

Siamo tornati alle sette, stanchi e contenti. In macchina nessuno ha parlato. A casa i bambini hanno dormito subito, con la sabbia ancora nelle scarpe.
