Music: the technical words

Two English words come out of the single Italian noun sitting inside il concerto solistico, and English gave them different jobs. « A concert » is the evening: the hall, the programme, the people who paid to get in. « A concerto » is one particular kind of piece, the one that sets a soloist against the orchestra, and it is so plainly a borrowing that English still offers an Italian plural for it, « concerti », beside « concertos ». Italian made no such division. Il concerto is both, and the language sorts them out by what follows rather than by the noun: andiamo a un concerto is a night out, il concerto per violino is a work, and this list writes il concerto solistico where nothing else in the sentence would say which is meant. The trap runs one way and is easy to walk into. Turn il concerto comincia alle otto into « the concerto begins at eight » and you have announced a single piece where the poster announced a whole evening. So read solistico as load-bearing: it is doing the work that English did by keeping two spellings.
