Sports and games

Matches, wins and defeats, cricket terms, wrestling, chess and cards.

Cricket supplies a whole vocabulary of its own: the बल्लेबाज़ bats, the गेंदबाज़ bowls, and a batsman plays an innings, पारी. Two older games have Hindi names that every child knows, कुश्ती and कबड्डी. Note the pair हारना, to lose, and हराना, to defeat someone — one long vowel apart.
