Hindi names relatives by which side of the family they are on. Your father’s father is दादा, your mother’s father नाना; your father’s younger brother is चाचा, your mother’s brother मामा. Older relatives take plural verbs and possessives as a mark of respect — मेरी माँ बहुत अच्छा खाना बनाती हैं — and भैया and दीदी are also how you address strangers a little older than you.
