Structural steelwork

One word in this list looks like an old friend and is not quite the one you expect. Steif and stiff are the same Germanic word, so an English reader meeting die Steife on a drawing tends to read it as stiffness. It is not a property but a part: a plate welded across the web of a beam, usually over a support or under a heavy point load, so that the thin web does not fold. The property that part provides has a longer name, die Steifigkeit, and the verb for adding it is aussteifen. Keep the two apart and the questions on a site make sense: a checker asking Wo sitzt die Steife? wants a location on the drawing, not a number from the calculation. The rest of the list follows the same order as a steel frame: sections, members, joints, the ways they fail and the workshop that makes them.
