Verbs that replace a clause

One word for what would otherwise take a whole subordinate clause.

German has a class of verbs that do the work of an entire clause: jemandem etwas zumuten is “to expect of someone something they should not have to bear”, and nachschieben is “to supply a reason only after the decision it was meant to justify”. One verb here leads two lives. Wer eine Vorschrift unterläuft keeps to its letter while emptying it of its purpose: the rule is got at from underneath rather than broken openly, and the person doing it is the subject. But mir ist ein Fehler unterlaufen has no culprit at all. The mistake is the subject, it “ran in underneath” by itself, the person it happened to stands in the dative, and the perfect takes sein. The first is an accusation; the second is one of the most face-saving ways German has of admitting something. The case of the person tells you which one you are hearing.
