The list every software notice is written in. One entry of it contains two false friends in a row: les paramètres de confidentialité. Les paramètres are the *settings* — the menu you open to change something: va dans les paramètres. English « parameter » is a quantity in a formula, or a boundary on what is allowed (« within the parameters of the study »), and it is never the menu. And la confidentialité is *data protection*, privacy in the legal sense, while English « confidentiality » is a duty to keep something secret — what a lawyer or a doctor owes you. So the English for the whole phrase is « privacy settings », and it shares not one word with the French. Both halves look translatable and both mislead, which is why the phrase is worth learning whole rather than in pieces.
