Emergencies and safety

The number, the exit, the statement.

The list nobody wants to need. In the middle of it is l’audition, and the English word spelt the same way belongs to a theatre. L’audition d’un témoin is the police or court *interview* — the session in which somebody is heard — and être entendu is to be interviewed in that sense. English « audition » is the tryout an actor or a musician goes to, and it never means questioning; the English for l’audition is « interview », « questioning » or, in court, « hearing ». The tryout, in French, is une audition too when a singer is heard — so the word does cover both, but the police sense is the frequent one and the one on this page. And there is a third: l’audition is also hearing as a faculty, une perte d’audition. One noun, three rooms.
