Negotiations and formal meetings

Agendas and votes, offers and concessions, and the moment both sides sign.

Formal meetings run on two-syllable words that share a syllable: 议(yì), “to debate”, in 议程(yìchéng) and 议题(yìtí); 签(qiān), “to sign”, in 签署(qiānshǔ) and 签约(qiānyuē). Next to them sit lively words borrowed from cards and games: 摊牌(tānpái) is to lay your cards on the table, 筹码(chóumǎ) a gambling chip, 拍板(pāibǎn) the clap of the board that ends a sale.
