Nature and the natural world

The landscape, the sky above it and what the ground is made of.

The landscape beyond mountain and river, and the sky above it. Many of these nouns are built from parts a learner already has: 山(shān) gives 山顶(shāndǐng), 山谷(shāngǔ) and 山坡(shānpō), and 海(hǎi) gives 海边(hǎibiān) and 海浪(hǎilàng). Landscapes take their own measure words: a stretch of forest or grassland is 一(yí)片(piàn), a mountain 一(yí)座(zuò), a river or a stream 一(yì)条(tiáo).
