Animals and plants

Farm and wild animals, birds and insects, and how plants grow.

Many names of animals and plants end in a general word that a learner already has — 鱼(yú), 鸟(niǎo), 花(huā), 树(shù) — which makes a new name easier to place: 鲸鱼(jīngyú), 荷花(héhuā). Animals take their own measure words: most take 只(zhī), cattle 头(tóu), a flock or herd 群(qún). And some words are wider than English: 羊(yáng) covers sheep and goats, 牛(niú) cows, bulls and oxen.
