The economy

Growth and recession, prices, trade, currencies and the public purse.

Economic Chinese packs a whole concept into one compound, and many of them come in pairs that are best learnt together: 出口(chūkǒu) and 进口(jìnkǒu), 顺差(shùnchā) and 逆差(nìchā), 宏观(hóngguān) and 微观(wēiguān), 上涨(shàngzhǎng) and 下跌(xiàdiē). Newspapers shorten the long terms, much as English does: 通货膨胀(tōnghuòpéngzhàng) becomes 通胀(tōngzhàng), and 国内生产总值(guónèishēngchǎnzǒngzhí) is very often written simply as GDP.
